Guest lecture Series on Rajasthani School of Paintings

The Department of History organized a series of Guest lecture on Rajasthani School of Paintings by Dr. Kanupriya Rathore (Assistant Professor) from the Department of Visual Arts on 27th and 30st January 2017. Dr. Kanupriya Rathore discussed the origin of Rajasthani paintings, which flourished in the royal court of Rajputana in northern India, mainly during 16th and 19th centuries. She also talked about the distinct characteristics and themes of these painting like the Krishna-Leela are the most popular theme along with some stories of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Folk lore like Dhola- Maru and Roopmati and Baajbahadur are also illustrated in these paintings, for which the artists provided patronage by the different rulers of Rajasthan. Dr. Rathore also discussed the four principal schools under the Rajasthani School of painting: -

  • Mewar School that contains the Nathdwara, Devgarh and Shahpura styles of paintings.
  • Marwar School comprising of Kishangarh, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Nagore, Pali and Ghanerao styles of Paintings.
  • Hadoti School of Painting included Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar style.
  • Dhundhar School of Painting included Amber, Jaipur, Shekhawati and Uniara .
