To acquaint the students with the character of Mahatma Gandhi and his contribution to Indian National Movements, a film “Gandhi” by Richard Attenborough was screened for all students of the Department of History on 24th February, 2020. The film dealt with Gandhi who was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule and his social, political and spiritual influence on the country during pre and post-independence times. The film starts with childhood, his early influences, and his study to England and then goes on further to South Africa to practice law. When he attempted to claim his rights as a citizen, he was abused and soon saw that all Indians suffered similar treatment. He developed a method of action based upon the principle of courage, non-violence and truth called Satyagraha. Using the principles of Satyagraha, he led the campaign for Indian independence from Britain. Gandhi had been an advocated for a united India where Hindu and Muslims lived together in peace and helped free the Indian people from Britain rule through nonviolence resistance and is honored by Indians as the father of the nation.
