Course Objectives
This course empowers students to trace the chronological and stylistic developments in India's historical contexts. They examine the interrelationship between architecture, sculpture, and paintings, exploring their essence, themes, and styles. Additionally, students familiarize themselves with art and architecture from prehistoric and proto-historic beginnings to the post-Mauryan era, extending to the 'classical' phase until approximately 600 CE.

Prehistoric Rock Art
Development of art and architecture in Indus –Saraswati Civilization-town planning and architecture in the main cities, sculptures(stone, terracotta and metal figures) and seals.
Study of art and architecture in the Mauryan period: palaces, pillars and sculptures
Development of art and architecture in the Shunga and Satvahana period.
Origin and Evolution of Stupa architecture.
A study of Stupas at Bharhut,Sanchi, Amravati and Nagarjunakonda with special reference to their architecture and sculpture.
